Summer Reading Rationale
In agreement with Northwestern High School and Rock Hill School District’s mission statement that we will “provide all students with challenging work that authentically engages them in the learning process and prepares them for successful futures,” a rigorous summer reading program is required of all students. Research has proven that the only way students become better readers is by reading; therefore, reading is critical to the success of all students. According to the International Reading Association (2009): “Adolescents entering the adult world in the 21st century will read and write more than at any other time in human history. They will need advanced levels of literacy to perform their jobs, run their households, act as citizens, and conduct their personal lives. They will need literacy to cope with the flood of information they will find everywhere they turn. They will need literacy to feed their imaginations so they can create the world of the future.”
Student Expectations
● Students are encouraged to read at least one or more books during the summer based on their course selections.
Summer Reading Objectives
● To help students continue to improve and develop skills of reading, critical thinking, and analysis
● To make the summer reading meaningful and relevant to each grade level’s curriculum
● To help students develop a life-long love of reading
